Surge protection

Protect your installation from surges and lightning strikes

Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) protect low-voltage installations against surges and even direct lightning strikes.

A surge is a short duration voltage spike on the mains supply or a low voltage cable, such as a telephone line. Surges can come from sources other than lightning, but those caused by lightning tend to be far higher, and potentially far more dangerous and damaging.

What an SPD protects

SPDs safeguard electrical and mechanical equipment against temporary excess voltage. Telephone, alarm and IT systems are particularly vulnerable, but household appliances and fittings can also be permanently damaged.

Why it matters for business

The fabric and contents of a building can be insured against lightning, but it does not take much imagination to see the disruption and cost to a business if its IT and/or security systems were lost without warning.

The first line of defence

The mains power feed is the primary entrance for a voltage spike, so a surge protection device on the mains feed is the first line of defence. For commercial premises we also recommend independent surge protection for building management systems, fire and intruder alarms and CCTV.
